Mission: The North State Law Enforcement Officers Association is a non-profit organization devoted to the purpose of advancing the science and art of law enforcement and crime prevention and to ensure that a just atmosphere prevails for all law enforcement officers.
History: On May 20, 1952, James Samuels, Therman Brooks, Edward Bass, James Price and Oriel H. Leak gathered in Durham, NC and decided to organize an association to promote professionalism in police work and to further the utilization of minorities in law enforcement. At that time, the organization was known as the N.C. Negro Law Enforcement Officers Association. The name of the organization was later changed to North State Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Today, N.S.L.E.O.A. is the only organization in North Carolina, which unites every branch of law enforcement. All are eligible for membership, regardless of rank, assignment, or department affiliation. We also offer Honorary Memberships to non-law enforcement advocates who have demonstrated significant support for the advancement of the law enforcement profession and or the Association. The Association is further strengthened by an Auxiliary Association consisting of spouses and significant others who participate in and support activities of the Association. The Auxiliary has been very instrumental in the continued growth of the Association.
The Association realizes there is strength in unity. Together, we will ensure that a just atmostphere prevails for all law enforcement officers and support personnel.
Objectives:
*To Maintain law enforcement work as an honorable profession
*To bind members in close bond in order to promote the best interest for the common good.
*To strive toward true professionalism by preparing through education and training to keep abreast of current theories and techniques in the interest of better serving the public and the profession.
*To secure a closer official and personal relationship among minorities in law enforcement.
*To secure a merited recognition of minority law enforcement officers and their work.
*To increase and enhance minority performance through shared experiences.
*To work towards eliminating police brutality and racial discrimination.
